Mahale Mountains
and Lake Tanganyika

Tuesday, August 31

Dry river bed goes well up into the Mahale mountains.

The chimps were way up the mountain so we decided not to try to find them. Instead, we went on a nice hike up the dry river bed and looked for Colobus and Gray monkeys and baboons. We saw quite a few, but I didn't get any photos worth showing.

We all hiked about two miles up the river bed and then came down another path through the woods. The scenery is very beautiful, but it was quite hot.

By the time we got back down, we were all ready for a swim.  We jumped in with our clothes on, since they needed to be washed anyway.

After a nice lunch, I decided to stay at the camp and read while the rest of the family went out on the dhow with Emma to go swimming and snorkeling.

Before they left, Diana and I were in our tent when we heard some rustling in the bushes outside. I walked out just in time to see a three foot Monitor lizard walk across the beach in front of our tent. It dashed back into the shrubs before I could grab my camera.

I had a very relaxing afternoon and was sorry to have to leave. It would be easy to spend weeks in such a picturesque location, as long as I had plenty of books to read.
